SYMBOLS
This was a Creative Europe funded project comprising 6 partners from Spain, Slovenia, Italy, France, Republic of Ireland and Dundee and Angus College in the UK. Its core aim is to strengthen the knowledge and public awareness of cemeteries and associated arts as an important part of European cultural heritage, particularly amongst the youth and those suffering disability. The project generated a database of interesting cemetery symbols which inspired a printmaking residency in Aviles, Spain. The prints created, then inspired the creation of dance and music performances during a residency in Dundee in October 2015 and that was shown during an exhibition in Dundee in 2016. Throughout the project, the partners engaged with the local youth to inspire interest in the cultural side of cemeteries through investigative visits, symbol research and creation of interesting routes through cemeteries via the use of a mobile apps & QR codes.
